In the U.S. Navy, the term 'coldiron' refers to the condition of a ship's boilers when not actually fired-up. Thus, when all burners have been secured, or when all coals have been extinguished, and heat is no longer being produced by a boiler, then the boiler is said to be 'coldiron.' Further, in ships where a boiler room has been secured, i.e., no fires are being tended, that boiler room is then under a 'coldiron' watch by one or more watch standers assigned to ensure the integrity of that space. Coldiron watches are most usually assigned after normal working hours, on weekends, and holidays.
