Land for the school was donated in September 1899 by Martha Coldiron Hogg and S.P. Hogg. The school was founded as the Mamre Baptist College, and commenced operation on January 1, 1900.[citation needed] The name was changed to Oneida Baptist Institute on October 29, 1904.[citation needed] The school has a diverse student body, with approximately 40% of the students coming from Kentucky, 35% from other parts of the United States, and the remaining 25% being International. During the school's 112 year history, students from 61 countries have earned their high school diplomas.
The mission of Oneida Baptist Institute is to provide a Christian living, learning, and working environment in which each of its students, Christian or non-Christian, is diligently challenged to grow mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually in order to acquire an “Education for Time and Eternity.” Oneida is a school that accepts students from all fifty states and from around the world then introduces them to a different way of life, a Christ-centered life. The school provides structure that teaches discipline and promotes responsibility. Oneida Baptist Institute has full accreditation from the Kentucky Department of Education.[citation needed]
The school was founded by James Anderson Burns in an effort to end feuding among families in the area. It is affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Barkley Moore became president of the Institute in the early 1970s, and expanded the school's mission to include children from outside the area. Moore died in 1994. The current president is Dr. W. F. Underwood.[citation needed]
