History
The town was established in 1956 on the townland of Blackwood, just off the R403 between Prosperous, County Kildare and Timahoe, County Kildare to accommodate workers on the Bord na Mona works supplying a peat fired power station in Allenwood. It replaced earlier temporary workers camps at Killinthomas, County Kildare, Mucklon, County Kildare and Timahoe, County Kildare.
Habitat
The cutover area of Timahoe Bog which formerly supplied sod peat to Allenwood power station has been allowed to recolonise naturally for 20 years. It has become a focal point for naturalists and academics.
