Its football team currently plays in the Primera C Metropolitana, one of the fourth tier divisions of Argentine football.
The club was founded in 1956 with the name Club Deportivo Español on October, 12. The date was chosen as its foundation date to commemorate the arrived of Christopher Columbus to Americas.
The club made quick progress through the lower leagues arriving in the Primera in the 1985/86 season, finishing in third place after a successful campaign. This position would be achieved twice more: in 1988/89 season and 1992 Clausura tournament.
The club was relegated from the Primera at the end of the 1997/98 season. Since then Español has played in the 2nd and 3rd tiers of Argentine football.
Following its relegation to Primera B Metropolitana in 2003, the club was declared bankrupt and disbanded, but the fans got together to recreate the club under its new name Club Social, Deportivo y Cultural Español. The Argentine Football Association allowed the new club to take over the fixtures of the old one.
