He was raised in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii where he currently still resides.[4] Clay is an accomplished professional surfer and aquatic athlete.
When Marzo was 10 years old he won the Hawaii State 200m Freestyle in swimming.[5] He has a natural talent in the water, and began to focus solely on surfing as he got older. At age 11, he placed third at the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) national's competition. NSSA is an amateur surfing association that focuses on student surfers. Originated in Huntington Beach, California, NSSA is categorized into seven regional conferences. One of these is located in Hawaii.[6] When he was 15 he received two Perfect 10's, (the first time in NSSA History) to win a National title. His other accomplishments include being nominated for Maneuver of the Year at the 2007 Surfer Poll Awards, Water Man of the Year, 2006, and in 2005 he was in NSSA Open Men’s National Champion. Clay is a member of the Young Guns crew and is featured in Young Guns II and Young Guns III, along with other notable surfers Dane Reynolds and Julian Wilson. Other films include "Stranger than Fiction" "Today Tomorrow" and an episode of ESPN's E:60.
His sponsors include Quiksilver,[7] Skullcandy, SPY Optic, Future, Creatures of Leisure, Vestal, and Rockstar Energy.[8] DC
In December 2007 Marzo was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, a form of autism.[9] He is constantly seen rubbing his hands together at a rapid pace.[10] Clay helps out with an organization called Surfers Healing Camp. Originated in Malibu, California, Surfers Healing is a foundation for taking children with autism surfing, in hopes to enrich their lives by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing. Over 2,000 children per year participate in Surfers Healing Camps worldwide. In August 2008, Marzo's story was featured in a short documentary surf filmed titled "Clay Marzo: Just Add Water". Directed by Jamie Tlerney and Strider Wasilewski (also the executive producer).
