He was born on April 21, 1869 in Hartford, Connecticut and died on January 16, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island.[1] He graduated from Brown University in 1888 and served as its president from 1929[2] to 1936.[3] He also served as president of the Rochester Theological Seminary for thirteen years.[4] He was a member of the Laymen's Commission that produced "Re-Thinking Missions: A Laymen's Inquiry after One Hundred Years" (1932), which was a harsh critique of foreign missions.
Barbour died on January 16, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island, at the age of 67.
