It was created in 1990 by former tour agent Christof Ellinghaus. Its main goal was to provide American, Canadian and German independent artists with a way to distribute their records in the European market, particularly the UK, Germany, Austria and, in some cases, the Netherlands. Arts & Crafts in particular has an established relationship with City Slang including a European office. City Slang's website as well as including a blog featuring the latest news from the label, also offers downloads of the latest songs by the artists.
