Versions
Citavi is descended from a reference management program called LiteRat, developed at the Heinrich Heine University in 1995[3], and considered version 1.0. The first version to bear the Citavi name was released as Citavi 2.[4] Version 3 was released in November 2010, the first version with a user interface in English[5] (prior versions were in German only).
Citavi is offered as Citavi Free (no cost, limited to 100 references per project), Citavi Pro (commercial, unlimited solo projects, team projects limited to 100 references), Citavi Team (commercial, no restrictions), and Citavi Reader (commercial, read access to all projects, limited to editing solo projects up to 100 references).
Features
Citavi's core features are reference management, knowledge organization, and task planning. An online search feature lets the user search databases and catalogs from within the program.[6]

- Management of local files, such as PDFs (including automatic metadata import from PDF).[8]
- Online search in thousands of databases and library catalogs.[9][10]
- Publishing in over a thousand citation styles.[11]
- Integrated citation style editor.
- Works with Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org Writer, and various LaTeX editors.[6]
- Picker extensions for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Adobe Acrobat and Reader, to facilitate saving sources and quotations.[6][1] [12]
- Automatic import of references by ISBN, DOI name, or PubMed ID.
- Import from other reference management programs and formats, including EndNote, ProCite, and BibTeX.[13]
- Knowledge organization to collect and organize quotations and thoughts.[14][15]
- Task planner for scheduling.[16]
