- It is the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in Colorado.[2]
- It has a Level IIIC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the highest distinction granted by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children’s Hospital Colorado NICU treats nearly 750 infants each year from a 10-state area, and is the only NICU in the region with the experience and technology to treat virtually any medical condition affecting newborns.
- Children’s Hospital Colorado Heart Institute is recognized as an international leader in pediatric cardiac care and it is one of only eight stand-alone pediatric research centers in the nation. Children’s Hospital Colorado Heart Institute is the only full-service, pediatric cardiac care center in the seven-state region.
- Children’s Hospital Colorado Heart Institute Transplant Program has been a world leader in Heart Transplantations of infants and children for the last 15 years.
- Children’s Hospital Colorado offers leading pediatric weight management programs, including the SHAPEDOWN Clinic, the nation’s leading weight program for adolescents and children.
- Children’s Hospital Colorado Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders provides the region’s only Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program for brain tumor diagnosis and treatment; the only program for teen-aged children with cancer; the only Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program; and the only pediatric Experimental Therapeutics Program investigating promising new drugs for cancer treatment.
- Children’s Hospital Colorado is home to region’s first and only Center for Gait and Movement Analysis. The CGMA, or Gait Lab, is one of only 40 centers in the country that provides a comprehensive analysis of gait and movement for patients with neuromuscular disorders. This allows teams to gather data essential to helping children with neuromuscular issues, amputation and other conditions walk better.
Affiliation with The University of Colorado
Children’s campus is affiliated with, and adjacent to, the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. The University is home to world-class education and research facilities. Children’s is staffed with doctors from the department of pediatrics which was ranked 5th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report Honor Roll in 2011.
This proximity allows the hospital to be at the center of medical research in the Rocky Mountain region and to provide the latest and most effective treatment to its pediatric patients. Children’s has long been on the forefront of medical research, establishing a Research Foundation in 1953.
The hospital and its affiliates at the University are responsible for virtually all of the pediatric research published in the Rocky Mountain region in the past decade, as well as several internationally recognized medical milestones, including the discovery of toxic shock syndrome and development of new pediatric heart surgery techniques now used around the world.

History
In 1897, the idea for a children’s hospital in Colorado began with summer tent hospitals for babies inspired by Dr. Minnie C.T. Love. Denver’s high-country ventilation was touted as a cure for a variety of diseases. Using a mix of fresh air and Colorado sunshine, six medical staff and volunteer nurses treated up to 50 children under the age of five.
Early on, those volunteers saw a need for a permanent hospital that would “care for sick, injured and crippled children from birth to 16 years of age” and which would be supported mainly by volunteer contributions. With that goal to guide them, this same group of intrepid volunteers officially incorporated as The Children’s Hospital on May 9, 1908.
In 1909, Children’s converted a former residence at 2221 Downing Street in Denver into a “well equipped institution with a capacity of 30 beds,” admitting its first patients on Feb. 17, 1910.
As the demand for child healthcare services increased throughout the region, the hospital quickly outgrew its original location and raised funds to build a new and improved facility, which opened in 1917 at 19th Avenue and Downing Street in downtown Denver.
After numerous expansions over the years at the hospital’s downtown Denver location, Children’s Hospital Colorado opened its new campus in Aurora on September 29, 2007. The 1,440,000 square feet (134,000 m2) hospital includes 284 beds and advanced medical equipment especially designed for children, as well as inspiring artwork and outstanding family accommodations.
On June 21, 2011, the hospital announced that its name was changing from Children's Hospital to Children's Hospital Colorado. The hospital made the change to help differentiate it from other hospitals in the country with the same name.[3]

In 2009, Children’s Hospital Colorado was ranked as one of the nation’s 10 best pediatric hospitals by U.S. News and World Report making the publication’s distinguished “Honor Roll,” reserved for those hospitals with national rankings in every specialty area surveyed.
For more than a decade, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Children's Hospital Colorado as one of the nation's top 10 children’s hospitals. Children’s Hospital Colorado ranked seventh (7th) in the magazine's “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” issue published in May 2008.
Children’s was first awarded Magnet nursing status in 2005. The Magnet Nursing Services Recognition Program was established in 1993 to recognize healthcare organizations that provide the very best in nursing care. In 2011, Children's Hospital Colorado received its Magnet redesignation.
