The following is a list of characters from Jin Yong's wuxia novel The Deer and the Cauldron.

Wei Xiaobao and his family

• Wei Xiaobao (韋小寶) – the lazy, illiterate, witty and sly protagonist of the novel. He makes a number of seemingly impossible achievements through sheer luck and wit. He leads his family to Yunnan and lives there ever since his retirement from the jianghu.

• Wei Chunfang (韋春芳) – Wei Xiaobao's mother. She is a prostitute of the Lichun Brothel (麗春院) in Yangzhou.

• The seven wives
  • Su Quan (蘇荃) – formerly Hong Antong's wife. She decides to follow Wei Xiaobao after the Mystic Dragon Cult self-destructs due to internal conflict. She is the best in terms of prowess in martial arts among the seven.
  • Fang Yi (方怡) – Liu Dahong's disciple. She is captured by the Mystic Dragon Cult and forced to lure Wei Xiaobao into traps with her beauty. She is the most intelligent of the seven.
  • Princess Jianning (建寧公主) – the spoiled younger sister of the Kangxi Emperor. She inherits most of her traits from her mother, Mao Dongzhu. She is very demanding and fierce.
  • Zeng Rou (曾柔) – from the Wangwu Sect, she tried to assassinate Wei Xiaobao but ends up falling in love with him. In contrast with Jianning, she is the most polite and cultured of the seven.
  • Mu Jianping (沐劍屏) – Mu Jiansheng's younger sister. She is captured by the Mystic Dragon Cult and forced to join the cult. She is the most naive of the seven.
  • Shuang'er (雙兒) – a servant of the Zhuang family in Huzhou. The matriarch asks her to follow Wei Xiaobao as an expression of her gratitude to Wei for killing Oboi. She acts as Wei Xiaobao's personal bodyguard and shows the most understanding towards him.
  • A'ke (阿珂) – the daughter of Li Zicheng and Chen Yuanyuan. She has a crush on Zheng Keshuang previously but leaves him after he reveals his true colours. She is Wei Xiaobao's most beautiful wife.

• The three children
  • Wei Hutou (韋虎頭) – his name means "tiger head". His mother is A'ke.
  • Wei Tongchui (韋銅錘) – his name means "copper hammer". His mother is Su Quan.
  • Wei Shuangshuang (韋雙雙) – her name means "double double". Her mother is Jianning. She was originally named "Bandeng" (板凳), which means "wooden bench", but her name was changed on Su Quan's suggestion.

Qing Dynasty

• Kangxi Emperor (康熙皇帝) – the ruler of the Qing Dynasty. He develops a close friendship with Wei Xiaobao in their childhood. He is first known to Wei Xiaobao as "Xiaoxuanzi" (小玄子).

• Four Regents (四大顧命大臣)
  • Oboi (鳌拜) – a cruel and power-hungry aristocrat. He is removed from power by Wei Xiaobao and the young Kangxi Emperor and imprisoned. He is killed by Wei Xiaobao later.

  • Lu Yifeng (盧一峰) - magistrate of Jing County (靖縣)
  • Wu Zhirong (吳之榮) – governor of Yangzhou. He is responsible for the massacre of the Zhuang family of Huzhou. Wei Xiaobao frames him for being in league with the rebels and has him bound and sent to the Zhuangs, where he is brutally killed by the widows for revenge.

  • Duolong (多隆) – the leader of the imperial guards and a close friend of Wei Xiaobao. Wei Xiaobao is forced to kill him in order to save the trapped rebels. However, he survives the attack, without knowing that Wei was the one who attempted to kill him.
  • Shi Lang (施琅) – a former subject of the Kingdom of Tungning. He defects to the Qing Dynasty and is promoted to high ranks for his expertise in naval warfare through Wei Xiaobao's recommendation. He is appointed admiral of the naval forces during the campaign against Tungning.

Kingdom of Tungning of Taiwan (台灣鄭氏王朝)

• Koxinga (郑成功) – the founder of the kingdom. He wrestled control of Taiwan from the Dutch and established his kingdom on the island, where he prepared to seize control of the mainland from the Qing Dynasty.

• Zheng Keshuang (鄭克塽) – a grandson of Koxinga. He is the heir to the throne of the kingdom, which is independent of Qing rule. He is incompetent and spoilt by nature. He is the former lover of A'ke and she leaves him after he reveals his true colours. He surrenders to the Qing Dynasty eventually.

• "Five Tiger Generals" (五虎將)
  • Feng Xifan (馮錫範) – the teacher of Zheng Keshuang. He is also a member of the Kunlun Sect and is nicknamed "One Sword Thrust That Draws No Blood" (一劍無血) for his excellent swordplay skills.

Ming Dynasty associates

• Princess Changping (長平公主) – the daughter of the Chongzhen Emperor. She became a nun under the alias "Jiunan" (九難) after the fall of the Ming Dynasty. She steals A'ke from Chen Yuanyuan after her birth and raises A'ke as her disciple. She intends to use A'ke to kill Wu Sangui for revenge.
  • A'qi (阿琪) – a disciple of Jiunan. She is betrothed to Galdan Khan.

• Li Zicheng (李自成) – nicknamed the "Dashing King" (闖王). He led a rebellion against the Ming Dynasty in its final years and disappeared after his army was defeated by the Manchus.

• Chen Yuanyuan (陳圓圓) – Wu Sangui's concubine

• Tao Hongying (陶红英) - a palace maid. She served Princess Changping before the fall of the Ming Dynasty. She is ordered by her teacher to steal the Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters.

• Li Xihua (李西華) – Li Yan's son. He attempts to kill Li Zicheng, who forced his father to commit suicide years ago.

Prince Mu Residence (沐王府)

• Mu Jiansheng (沐劍聲) – a descendant of Mu Ying (Prince Mu) and leader of the anti-Qing forces in Yunnan. He is the older brother of Mu Jianping.
• Liu Dahong (柳大洪) – nicknamed "Iron Back Dragon" (鐵背蒼龍)
• Wu Lishen (吳立身) – nicknamed "Head-shaking Lion" (搖頭獅子) for his tendency to shake his head
  • Ao Biao (敖彪) - Wu Lishen's disciple

• Su Gang (蘇岡) - nicknamed "Sacred Hand Resident" (圣手居士). He is the sworn brother of Bai Hanfeng.

• Bai Hanfeng (白寒楓) - the younger brother of Bai Hansong. He accuses the Heaven and Earth Society for the death of his brother.

Others

• Mao Shiba (茅十八) – a pugilist who brings Wei Xiaobao to Beijing from Yangzhou, marking the start of the latter's adventures. He accuses Wei Xiaobao of being a race traitor after Wei has no choice but to help Kangxi. He is captured and sentenced to death but Wei Xiaobao saves his life and helps him escape.

• Gui family
  • Gui Xinshu (歸辛樹) – a member of the Mount Hua Sect, who is nicknamed "Undefeated Divine Fists" (神拳無敵). He is killed along with his family by imperial guards.
  • Gui Erniang (歸二娘) – Gui Xinshu's wife
  • Gui Zhong (歸鐘) – the son of Gui Xinshu and Gui Erniang. He first appeared in Sword Stained with Royal Blood as a sickly infant.

Mystic Dragon Cult (神龍教)

• Hong Antong (洪安通) – the leader of the cult. He is killed during an internal conflict in the cult.

• Mao Dongzhu (毛東珠) – Mao Wenlong's daughter. She serves the cult by impersonating the empress dowager. She teaches the young Kangxi Emperor martial arts. She is exposed by Wei Xiaobao and eventually killed by the Gui family.

• Liu Yan (柳燕) - Mao Dongzhu's junior. She is killed by Fang Yi.

• Deng Bingchun (鄧炳春) - killed by Wei Xiaobao

• Fat Monk (胖頭陀) – the cult's "Fat Honorary Member" (胖尊者). He was once fat but gradually shrunk in size and becomes thin after being poisoned by Hong Antong. He is killed by Hong Antong during the cult's internal conflict.

• Thin Monk (瘦頭陀) – the cult's "Thin Honorary Member" (瘦尊者). He was once thin but gradually became fatter after being poisoned by Hong Antong. He is killed by the Gui family while trying to save his lover, Mao Dongzhu.

• Wu Yingxiong (吳應熊) – Wu Sangui's son. Princess Jianning refuses to marry him and cuts his genitals and accuses him of molesting her. He is held hostage in the capital city by Kangxi and executed after his father stages a rebellion.

Miscellaneous characters

• Shunzhi Emperor (順治皇帝) – formerly the ruler of the Qing Dynasty and father of the Kangxi Emperor. He abdicates after the death of his favourite concubine and became a monk under the name "Xingchi" (行癡). He is temporary reunited with his son with Wei Xiaobao's help but decides to permanently retire from state affairs after providing some brief advice to his son on ruling the empire.
  • Xingdian (行顛) – Xingchi's junior. He possesses extraordinary strength and defends Xingchi from enemies at the expense of his life.

She becomes the head of the family after the male members of the family were massacred by Oboi. She is grateful to Wei Xiaobao for helping them take their revenge and asks Shuang'er to accompany him.
• Hu Yizhi (胡逸之) – nicknamed "Hundred Victorious Saber King" (百勝刀王) or "Handsome Saber King" (美刀王) for his excellent use of the saber.
