Military career
Born in Florence in Italy,[1] Charles Ellice was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1839.[2]
He went on to become Quartermaster-General to the Forces in 1871[3] and in 1876 was appointed Adjutant-General to the Forces.[4] In this role he advised the Government that the defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana of 1879 had arisen because they had under-estimated the military capability of the Zulus.[5] He left the post of Adjutant-General in 1882 and retired in 1887.[6]
He was also Colonel of the South Wales Borderers from 1884[7] until his death in 1888.[8]
He lived at 12 South Audley Street in London.[9]
Family
He was married to Louisa Caroline Lambton.[1]
