Other current positions include Scientific Director and CEO of the Canadian Obesity Network and President of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons. He also serves on numerous committees of professional organizations including The Obesity Society(TOS) and the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO).

Life and career
Born in Berlin (West) Germany in 1959, he moved to India in 1965 where he lived till 1977 after graduating from the Frank Anthony Public School, New Delhi. On his return to Germany in 1977, he received his Abitur from the Weidig Gymnasium, Butzbach, Hesse before taking up his medical training at the Free University of Berlin from which he graduated in 1986. He received his Medical Doctorate for his work on the "Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition on norepinephrine reactivity and catecholamine metabolism" (magna cum laude) under the guidance of Thomas Phillipp and completed his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University Klinik Benjamin Franklin. In 1995, following a research year at the Eccle's Institute of Human Genetics, Salt Lake City, UT under the guidance of Jean-Marc Lalouel, he received his Habilitation (PhD - Equivalent) and was appointed Professor of Medicine (C3) at the Free University of Berlin. In 2000, he was appointed Professor of Medicine (C3 - tenured) at the Humboldt University - Charite, where he worked at the Franz-Volhard Klinik in the department of Nephrology (under the guidance of Friederich Luft). From 2000-2002 he was also Resesarch Group Leader at the Max-Delbrueck Centre for Molecular Medicine. in 2002 he was awarded a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Cardiovascular Obesity Research and Management and was appointed Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. In 2007 he was awarded the Alberta Health Services endowed Chair in Obesity Research and Management and appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, where he is also currently the Medical Director of the Edmonton Region Bariatric Program.
Contributions
In 2005 he founded the Canadian Obesity Network, for which he has raised over $10 Million since its inception. With well over 4000 members, the Canadian Obesity Network is now the largest national organization of obesity researchers, health practitioners, decision makers and other stakeholders in Canada. He is also a founding member and current President of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons. His research contributions in the area of hypertension, obesity and metabolic disease include over 300 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and invited scholarly papers. He is widely recognized as one of the world's foremost thought leaders and clinical experts in obesity management and is known as the developer of the Edmonton Obesity Staging System, which is now used to triage patients to tertiary bariatric care in Alberta, Canada and beyond. He writes a daily obesity blog (Dr. Sharma's Obesity Notes) and has given more than 300 media interviews on global, national and local TV, radio and print media.
