Willersley Castle

Willersley Castle

Willersley Castle is a late 18th century country mansion situated above the River Derwent at Cromford, Derbyshire which is now operated as an hotel. It is a Grade II* listed building.

The house was built for the occupation of Sir Richard Arkwright the great industrialist of Rock House, Crompton and Crompton Mill , (one of the Derwent Valley Mills), by architect William Thomas. Arkwright died in 1792 before completion.

The castellated house is three storeys with a seven bay frontage, the central bay flanked by full height round towers. It was occupied by the Arkwright family until 1922. The estate was sold in 1928 and opened as a Methodist Guild holiday centre. During World War II 1940-46 it was a maternity hospital. It is now a Christian Guild hotel.
