Linda Slavin is a politician and political activist in
Peterborough, Ontario ,Canada .She received her
Bachelor of Arts degree from theUniversity of Toronto . She married her husband,Trent University physics professor Alan Slavin, in1967 . She is extensively involved in issues relating to the environment,social justice , andnuclear disarmament , and she has been a long-time member of the Kawartha chapter of the Canadian groupProject Ploughshares . In1994 , Slavin was one of 30 persons chosen to monitor the elections inSouth Africa withOxfam -Canada. She has been a prominent participant in vigils protesting the 2003 invasion ofIraq , and is chair of the Peterborough Coalition for Social Justice.Slavin has sought public office in the past often, but has never been elected. She was the NDP candidate for Peterborough in the 1984 federal election, and finished third against Progressive Conservative
Bill Domm . She ran again in the 2004 federal, and finished third against LiberalPeter Adams . Slavin also sought election to theLegislative Assembly of Ontario in the elections of 1985 and 1987, as a candidate of theOntario New Democratic Party . She finished second on both occasions. In 2006 she was theNew Democratic Party (NDP) candidate for Peterborough for the 39th federal election, finishing third against ConservativeDean Del Mastro , taking 25.67% of the vote share.In the 2006 Ontario municipal elections Linda ran for Mayor of
Peterborough, Ontario . She came in second place during the race, losing toPaul Ayotte by a margin of 26.22% of the vote.
