In 1721, following the Great Northern War, the southern parts of the counties of Viborg and Nyslott and Kexholm were ceded by the Treaty of Nystad to the Russian Empire. The remaining territories were joined into the new County of Savolax and Kymmenegård. In 1743 following a new conflict another part in the south was ceded to Russia in the Treaty of Åbo. Togeather the ceded territories became part of the Russian Vyborg Governorate, which also became known as Old Finland.
In 1775 the county was split into the Savolax and Karelia County (Swedish: Savolax och Karelens län, Finnish: Savonlinnan ja Karjalan lääni) and the Kymmenegård County (Swedish: Kymmenegårds län, Finnish: Kymenkartanon lääni).
