Mid-Ulster District Council

Mid-Ulster District Council

Mid-Ulster District Council is a proposed Northern Irish local government district. Under the latest decision by the Review of Public Administration the district would be created by merging Magherafelt District Council, Cookstown District Council, and Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council.

The new district will cover parts of counties Londonderry, Tyrone, and Armagh, taking in the entire western shore of Lough Neagh, and bordering County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. The district will have an electorate of 86,591.cite web | title=Provisional Recommendations of the Local Government Boundaries Commissioner for Northern Ireland| work=LGBC | url=http://www.lgbc-ni.org/index/provisional_recommendations.htm | accessdate=2008-09-26] The name of the new District was announced on September 17. The first election for the new district was due to take place in May 2009, but on April 25, 2008, Shaun Woodward, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland announced that the scheduled 2009 district council elections were to be postponed until 2011.
