Caballo Lake State Park is a New Mexico State Park located 16 miles south of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico on the Rio Grande River. [http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/caballo.htm] . The lake was created in the 1930's when an earthen dam was built across the Rio Grande. The dam is 96 feet tall and 4558 feet across. The size of the lake varies by season, but when the lake is full, it is over 11,500 acres in area, and 18 miles long, making it New Mexico's third largest lake.
