Daan Snouck Hurgronje (Deegmeester Daan)Osdorp Posse was one of the first rap groups to produce rap music in Dutch language. ‘The Posse’ was formed in 1989 by Def-P (lead singer), King (backup vocal), IJsblok (backup vocal) and Seda (beat creator). Due to their fairly hard and extreme views on everyday life portrayed in their songs, they soon had a fairly large fan base in the Dutch underground scene.
Their debut album Osdorp Stijl released in 1992 contained songs like "Moordenaar!" (Murderer!), "Katholieke trut" (Catholic bitch) and "Commerciële AIDS" (Commercial AIDS). This album set the tone, by using hardcore beats combined with a hardcore message shouted out by a seemingly furious Def-P. The main subjects handled in their songs were the poor quality and lack of creativity in commercial music ("Commerciële AIDS"); religious fanaticism ("Katholieke trut"); and the joys of drinking beer ("Bier").
In 1993 the album Roffer dan Ooit was released. However the Dutch radio accused the band of "playing ghetto":
“ Op deze CD staat bijvoorbeeld ook de Osdorp Posse, he. Een crew die in het Nederlands, het Amsterdams rapt. En zij doen daarop onder andere het nummer "Moordenaar!" Ja, ik denk dat dat niet echt bijdraagt aan het serieus nemen van hip-hop want dat is toch een beetje ghetto'tje spelen. "On this CD is featured for example also the Osdorp Posse. A group that raps in Dutch, actually the Amsterdam dialect. And they also perform among others the song "Murderer!" Yes, I think that this does not contribute to taking hip-hop seriously, because it is a bit like "playing ghetto"
” "
The same year a new album was released: Vlijmscherp and on this album the group commented about their treatment in the Dutch media. In one of the songs from the album, "Ghetto'tje spelen" (a pun on "ghetto te spelen"; "Ghetto Game", but basically means "Playing Ghetto"), the DJ who accused the Posse of "playing ghetto" was insulted by Def-P in the following lyric:
“ Kaaskop, kut, hou je idiote smoel, want je weet niet waarover je praat (Cheesehead, cunt, shut your stupid mouth, because you don't know what you're talking about) ” Due to the explicit nature the group were banned all over the Dutch radio and both public and commercial radio stations refused to air music from Osdorp Posse.
This did not imply the end of Osdorp Posse, but a dramatic change in style and in 1995 Afslag Osdorp was released, which was considered by many as their finest album in which social issues like prostitution, real love, domestic abuse and religion were covered. The radiostation Villa 65 played one song once, providing the total media exposure to date.
In 1996 the band played with death metal band Nembrionic which resulted in Briljant, Hard en Geslepen in which hip hop and metal were combined. In 1998 they started their own record label, Ramp Records. Osdorp Posse managed to get their first Top-10 hit in 2000 with the single "Origineel Amsterdams" and after the single entered the Top-10 Dutch radio and television started to play them again. The lead rapper Def-P also started to embark on solo projects from 2001 onwards, the most successful being Def P & Beatbusters.
In 2008 the Osdorp Posse decided to prepare their last album and tour. De double CD called "2 Decennia" was released on November 13, 2008. The project contains remixes of Osdorp Posse tracks, made by other respected bands, and a cd with the best work and 6 new tracks. Together with friends, Jerome XL, Casto and Macronizm they toured Holland and Belgium in 2009. September 2009 marks the ending of an era for the Osdorp Posse. After the last shows in the legendary Melkweg in Amsterdam, the crew will stop performing and recording after 20 years.
In 2008 Def-P and fellow MC Jerome XL decided to start a new crew to up the level in the Dutch Hip Hop game after Osdorp Posse said farewell. The crew is called Digibombers, and their first album can be expected in 2010. Fans are already pickup up on it,and the chances are that this project will be highly anticipated by the Hip Hop scene.
