- Brotherhood of Makuta (Bionicle)
"This article is about the fictional race. For the fictional character sometimes referred to by the same name, see
Makuta Teridax (Bionicle) ."The Brotherhood of Makuta are a sect of evil and sadistic
shapeshifters within the fictionalLego Bionicle universe named Makuta that lead distinct armies and warriors. They serve as mysterious antagonists during theBionicle Chronicles storyline, the first series in the storyline, and focus upon the actions of their current leader, Teridax, simply known as the Makuta. Teridax became the main antagonist of the BIONICLE storyline, who led a rebellion against the Great Spirit Mata Nui and plotted an extensive plan to overthrow him, so far successful. In the next series,Bionicle Adventures andBionicle Legends , the full extent, including the Brotherhood's history and involvement within the Bionicle storyline are fully explored, and its members.History
The Brotherhood of Makuta was founded roughly 100,000 years prior to the events of
Bionicle Legends with the creation of the Makuta species. On a remote southern island, the Great Spirit Mata Nui crafted their living bodies from a pool of greenish-black liquid hidden in a underground chamber. The Brotherhood was led by Miserix and took control of servants and armies such as the Rahkshi to form the Brotherhood, stationed on the island of Destral. Gorast, using a artifact known as the Heart of the Visorak, enslaved Visorak armies for the Brotherhood's use. They established alliances with the Dark Hunters to modify the Hunters' agents, increase their ranks, loan weapons, and create Rahi in exchange for the services of the Dark Hunter agents for the Makuta. They also collaborated with the Nynrah Ghosts. The earliest known action of the Brotherhood was sending Mutran, Icarax, and Pridak on a mission to negotiate with the Vortixx to lower the cost of their exports, as the Vortixx demanded prices higher than what Matoran settlements could afford. Several centuries later, the Brotherhood allied themselves with the League of Six Kingdoms, providing Rahi beasts. The alliance held, but the Brotherhood distrusted the League, complying if only to service the warlords of the Great Spirit. However, Miserix enlisted Takadox to watch over the Barraki, nevertheless, and Mutran personally never sent Kalmah a Rahi that lived over three days.Nearly 80,000 years prior to the events of
Bionicle Legends , the League finally proposed a plot to conquer Metru Nui and overthrow the Great Spirit, which caused Takadox to sell them out to the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood mustered Makuta Teridax, backed by armies of Exo-Toa, Visorak, Rahkshi, and Toa in a united effort to crush the League and successfully captured the Barraki warlords, and of lesser importance, Mutran and Gorast to investigate the remains of Kalmah's fortress. Teridax was unable to execute them (due to Botar's intervention), but began to form a plan based on the idea that the Brotherhood could perhaps overthrow the Great Spirit where the League could not. Sometime after the end of the League, the Matoran Civil War occurred. Makuta Teridax, seeing the possibility of seeing how the Brotherhood could impose order, sealed the war armies in the Archives and unleashed Rahi exhibits upon them, in what was known as the Archives Massacre. The Matoran began to fear the Brotherhood after the event, and Miserix assigned Makuta to regions across the Matoran Universe. To prevent such an incident occurring again, Miserix also declared the Brotherhood must increase their involvement outside Destral's laboratories, the Makuta species as a whole discovered the honor and devotion to the Great Spirit, and felt jealously toward the Great Spirit, resentment and ultimately hatred.Meanwhile, during the events of the Matoran Civil War, Makuta Mutran was dispatched to a unnamed island where the being Tren Krom was located, the objective of the mission was to ascertain him as a threat or not. Mutran was pulled into his cave and Tren Krom probed his mind as Mutran did the same. He fell unconscious and awakened with knowledge that Teridax needed to overthrow the Great Spirit, and informed him on his return. Teridax called a Convocation of the Makuta and stated his "Plan" to overthrow the Great Spirit. Miserix attacked Teridax, realizing the plan was also an attempt at leadership, but Teridax left it to the assembled Makuta to decide whom they favored, and the majority sided with Teridax, who became leader and sentenced Miserix to death as his first act, leaving Spiriah and Krika to carry out the task. Spiriah later confronted Krika, who told him he lacked the will to kill Miserix mask-to-mask, and left Krika to do so. He ultimately decided to give him a chance, and imprisoned him on a volcanic island named Artidax, guarded by Rahi, unknown to Spiriah or the other Makuta. The following year, Gorast and Icarax tracked those who opposed the Plan with objections or sided with Miserix initially and killed them, nailing their Kanohi to the walls of the Convocation Chamber as a reminder.
From 70,000 years to the events of
Bionicle Adventures , the Brotherhood began to oppress Matoran without jeopardizing their image. At 70,000 years prior, Spiriah conducted an experiment on Zakaz and its inhabitants, the Skakdi, using a Makuta virus, seeing a potential army, and departs leaving the island under the Visorak's protection, and when he returned, the Skakdi developed heightened negative characteristics and elemental and vision powers, which they used to overthrow the Visorak and begin a civil war. The Brotherhood in response quarantined the island and planned to execute Spiriah for his treachery, instead going rogue for real, instead of being labeled rogue as the Brotherhood claimed he was when conducting the experiment. At 30,000 years prior, Makuta began experiencing difficulties with moving their armor, starting with Bitil. Chirox examined this development and pulled his armor, revealing greenish-black energy and sampled it. He concluded the Makuta evolved from a physical state to pure energy, most likely because of the process they were created. In response, Teridax summoned the Nynrah Ghosts to craft thick Protosteel armor for the Makuta. All members of the Brotherhood share certain powers. Shape-shifting, shadow energy, and the ability of creating kraata, a wormlike entity that can take control of inanimate objects. Each of them also possesses unique powers of their own, adding up to 42 powers of Kraata, or 42 powers for the Makuta as well.
The Brotherhood is formed of many armies and pawns, which are led by members of the Makuta species. The Brotherhood's main armies consist of the Rahkshi, and the Visorak, armour controlled by kraata and spider-creatures, respectively. The Brotherhood's other servants include Exo-Toa, several Rahi, and Dark Hunters that have defected over to the Brotherhood's side including many more mutated beings. The Brotherhood's former servants include traitors such as Roodaka, former allies such as the Toa Hagah and the Dark Hunters, and Brotherhood weapons given to the Dark Hunters such as Voporak.
They have recently dispatched some of their number to Karda Nui to conquer the region and stop the creation of any future Toa of Light. Splitting into two groups, one in the sky (the Phantoka), and one in the swamp (the Mistika), the Phantoka were blinded by Toa Matoro's use of the Ignika, and thus enlist the aid of Shadow Matoran they created. The Mistika were mutated by the mutagen in the swamp, and are permanently unable to shapeshift or access all their Kraata powers.
Because they have evolved past the point of needing bodies they appear to be immortal but are not indestructible and exhibit a great vulnerability to light energy. All Makuta seen so far in the series are manipulative, egocentric, power hungry and vicious and share a dry, cruel sense of humour.
Many Makuta have appeared in Lego sets, some in full sets, others in combos.

History
Makuta Mutran, like his fellow Makuta, were assigned to create bio-mechanical Rahi to populate the BIONICLE world. The task became an obsession to Mutran.
Mutran's first known actions were 100,000 years prior to the events of
Bionicle Legends . Shortly after the completion of the Brotherhood's home base, Destral, Chirox and Mutran worked on Spiriah's failed Rahi experiment. During this time, Chirox and Mutran worked together as friends, but both despised the Makuta who would earn the nickname "failure". They were approached by Miserix. He informed the duo that the Vortixx had begun to demand higher prices for their exports', higher than what Matoran settlements could afford, and asked for one of them to journey with Icarax and Pridak to negotiate. The mission was a success- after Icarax demolished a few buildings. On departure, Mutran remembered he forgot his pet Rahi, a sentient rock. It later devoured Vortixx and grew into The Mountain.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 1". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles1.aspx] ]Soon after the mission to Xia, Mutran, Teridax, Icarax, and Chirox were present at a meeting with the League of Six Kingdoms. He and his fellow Makuta were tasked with providing the faction Rahi under a uneasy alliance.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 2". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles2.aspx] ] Mutran and Gorast were later tasked with "cleaning up" Kalmah's fortress after the League rebelled. Although they found nothing, Mutran discovered a carving. The Blade Burrowers, his creations, had begun creating maps comprised of underground tunnels. Thus was unusual, as Mutran never sent Kalmah a Rahi surviving beyond three days. He inquired the Rahi himself with a imprisoned Toa's Kanohi Rau, yet the Burrowers' only know they must continue this tunnel pattern. As of yet, the mystery is beyond his comprehension, but Mutran believes the answer is of great importance.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 3". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles3.aspx] ] 500 years following the end of the League of Six Kingdoms, Mutran was assigned the center of the Southern Continent to guard following the Matoran Civil War.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 4". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles4.aspx] ] He at this time was already dispatched by Miserix to acertain whether Tren Krom was a threat to the Brotherhood. He was pulled into his cave and Tren Krom probed his mind, leaving Mutran to do the same. Hanging onto survival, he fell unconscious and awoke on the beach. He realized that he had Tren Krom's knowledge- knowledge that Teridax needed to overthrow the Great Spirit.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 5". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles5.aspx] ] Upon his return to Destral, Mutran informed Teridax of his new-found knowledge. In response, Teridax called a Convocation of the Makuta, in which Mutran was present, and stated his plan to overthrow Mata Nui. He witnessed Miserix being overthrown and fighting Teridax, and sided with Teridax, hesitating at first, but quickly realizing his Plan could work, and huddled with Teridax and Chirox at how to best strike at the Great Spirit.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 6". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles6.aspx] ]
Later, he visited Destral with Bitil to discuss how to best support the Plan, and how disappointing it was that much of it could rely on the actions of Kojol. Suddenly, Mutran and Bitil found themselves unable to move. Chirox concluded the Makuta evolved from organic tissue to energy, and Teridax ordered the Nynrah Ghosts to modify Mutran and the other Makuta's armor. Chirox also discovered they could take over robotic and spiritless bodies by transporting their energy within it, took over an Exo-Toa, and threw Mutran into a wall. He decided to let him live, if only to introduce him to his Lohrak.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 7". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles7.aspx] ] As he worked on his Lohrak, he investigated the disappearance of two Rahkshi squads. They had been dispatched to the Southern Continent. He found it coincidental that they participated in a raid led by Kojol to steal the Kanohi Avohkii. This was dispelled when two Exo-Toa disappeared from their guard post, and suspected that someone was taking revenge for their raid. He surmised Kojol would follow, but decided not to inform Teridax because he despised the buffoon and wished he would die so he wouldn't have to do kill him himself. Later, he regretted his actions as Kojol and anyone else who knew of Artakha's location died, wanting to know the location for himself.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 8". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles8.aspx] ]
Shortly after the death of Kojol, he was visited by Chirox, who carried a dead specimen of his Lohrak. He raged, as the Lohrak was a name of one of his previous creations. The Lohrak was a slimy Rahi that Chirox had struggled to create. The confrontation ended when the Great Cataclysm occurred, devastating the Destral base, but confirming the Plan's first stage succeeded. Despite Teridax's intital success, he was disgraced with the fiasco that followed.Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 9". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles9.aspx] ] During the 1000 years (as Teridax terrorized the Matoran) that followed, Mutran continued his experiments while ignoring his duty to the Southern Continent. He experimented with Kraata to created a Light-sucking creature named Shadow Leeches. He tested them on a Southern Continent inhabitant Vican, who sought an adventurous life. He became his lab assistant, and brought him to Destral. Together, they witnessed Gorast throwing Vultraz, another Shadow Matoran, through a wall. Gorast was furious as Vultraz "failed" to inform the Brotherhood of his discovery- a gateway into Karda Nui. Gorast informed Teridax of their discovery, and Mutran and Vican joined Antroz, Vamprah, Chirox, Gorast, Krika, and Bitil to transform the Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran and conquer the region.
He engineered a Hive to house the Shadow Leeches. He built vats to house his creations (including a toxic one perfect for Chirox) as Antroz, Vamprah, and Chirox transformed the Av-Matoran. He was responsible for the mutations of several Shadow Matoran, including the addition of wings and Radiak becoming a quadruped in a spider-like form because he was moody. He decided to create a chronicle of his life in the Brotherhood, named The Mutran Chronicles (see
Bionicle Legends ), and just as he completed, witnessed a bright light that came from Toa Mahri Matoro's use of the Kanohi Ignika. The light blinded his Makuta allies, but left Mutran fortunately intact. As he worked on the 3rd batch of Shadow Leeches and ordering Vican to kick a failed experiment out of a window, he was approached by Vamprah and brought to Antroz in the Makuta's lair. He then engineers a flying steed for Vican to fly to Destral and summon Icarax, giving him a Tablet of Transit. He later fought against Lewa, Pohatu, Kopaka, Tanma, Solek, and Photok when they discovered the Shadow Leech Hive, casting Lewa, Pohatu, Tanma and Photok into a vision of Ignika as a monster. He knocked Solek unconscious and used a mental assault to cause Kopaka to doubt his powers and bring the Toa Nuva to collapse, and attempted to finish him off with a Shadow bolt. However, Solek deflected the attack with a Light shield, and Kopaka, fooling the Makuta, quickly recovered and bound Mutran in ice. It was the intervention of Antroz, Chirox, and Vamprah that defeated the three Toa Nuva and Matoran.
When they awaken, Mutran assists in threatening the Matoran if the Toa attempt to escape and transform them into Toa of Shadow. Pohatu, however, uses his Stone powers to knock them off-balance and uses his Kanohi Kakama to escape through the bonds and destroy the Shadow Leech vats, and Toa Ignika kills the Hive, as it was a modified sentient version of the pet rock Mutran once had. Mutran and the other Makuta escape, and he almost kills Kirop for leading the Toa to the Hive. In retaliation, they assault the final Av-Matoran village, finding it abandoned, as they infiltrated the Makuta's lair for a Keystone. They retreat and battle against the six. Antroz and Icarax are injured, forcing Mutran to unleash a blast of Shadow, and calls for the Makuta to retreat to the Swamp of Secrets before the other Toa Nuva retrieve the Keystones. Mutran is caught briefly by the Toa Nuva, and left alone as the Makuta and the Toa enter the "final battle".Farshley, Greg (2008): "The Mutran Chronicles, Entry 10". [http://bioniclestory.com/LatestStory/Blog/MutranChronicles10.aspx] ] Farshley, Greg (April 1st, 2008): "BIONICLE Legends 9: Shadows in the Sky." New York: Scholastic. ISBN 978-0439916417]
As the Toa Nuva and Makuta battled the "final battle", Mutran relocated in a island in the Swamp of Secrets using equipment stored outside. To guard the Shadow Leech vats in their new location, he engineered a Klakk, a former Rahi creation, which busted from the vat and emitted a sonic shriek at Vican, and flew away. Mutran ordered him to retrieve the beast. He did not know the shriek shattered the barrier that Shadow Leeches make when they suck the Light from its victim, thus turning Vican back to a Le-Matoran, and then abandoned him to tell Toa Takanuva of his discovery. After a long period, Mutran grew impatient with Vican until Antroz teleported to him. Antroz announced they must be prepared for the final stages of the Plan, which Mutran briefly wondered if it was wise to allow the Toa Nuva to awaken the Toa Nuva, but was corrected, and was sent to aid Gorast in a fight against Icarax, who had begun to crush the Codrex to sabotage the Plan.
