Diaper bank

Diaper bank

A diaper bank is a Community Benefit Organization whose purpose is to charitably collect, manage, store and distribute diapers to meet local need.

History

The first diaper bank in the United States was founded in 1994 by Hildy Gottlieb and Dimitri Petropolis, of Help4NonProfits to meet the holiday diaper needs of the Tucson, Arizona city community. Later, through the networking of local businesses and their capabilities, they created the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona which opened in 2000. The service was immensely popular in the community, and the programs success encouraged the formation of similar organizations across the United States.

Operation

Diaper banks are considered Community Benefit Organizations or non-profit organizations, and are usually categorized under the 501(c)(3) tax law provision of the United States. They rely on charitable donation for operating costs from businesses or individuals.
