Sierra Pacific Resources nyse|SRP is a utility holding company based in Reno, Nevada.

History

The holding company was created in 1984 in the reorganization of Sierra Pacific Power Company (formed 1928). In 1999, it merged with Nevada Power Company of Las Vegas.

On January 9, 2006 the company announced a plan to connect the Nevada Power and Sierra Pacific electrical networks. In addition the company announced plans to construct two 750MW pulverized coal generation units near Ely. The plant site will be designed to allow the addition of two 500MW coal gasification units if that technology becomes affordable.

On September 22, 2008, Nevada Power and Sierra Pacific Power began doing business as NV Energy. This is the result of the corporate decision to unify its image under a single brand. The company is seeking approval from shareholders to change the company's name to NV Energy, Inc.
