Robarts Research Institute

The Robarts Research Institute is a non-profit medical research facility in London, Ontario, Canada with a staff of more than 600 people. Robarts scientists include physicians and physicists, biologists and biomedical engineers, and the range of diseases they study include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and many forms of cancer. It is also well known for its medical imaging research. Robarts was amalgamated with the University of Western Ontario in July 2007. Before then, it was Canada's only independent research facility.

The institute was founded in 1986, under the guidance of neurologist Dr. Henry Barnett, most famous for his work with Aspirin as a preventive therapy for heart attack and stroke. Dr. Mark Poznasky became scientific director in 1993 and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2005 for his work. He resigned in March 2007.

Dr. John MacDonald, the current Scientific Director, joined the Institute July 1, 2008. Dr. MacDonald holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and has conducted postdoctoral work at the University of St. Andrews, UK, McGill University, and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. His research addresses neurotransmitter actions in central mammalian neurons and has attracted funding from CIHR, the Medical Research Council, Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Stroke Network, the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation, and National Centres of Excellence.

His administrative experience includes serving as Chair of the University of Toronto's Department of Pharmacology from 2000 to 2006, and he is a founding member of NoNO Inc., a biotechnology company dedicated to developing and commercializing therapeutic compounds for stroke and related neurological disorders. Dr. MacDonald is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and an active member of the Canadian Stroke Network.
