(1999)"Self-Destruct Tour" was a
tour in support ofNine Inch Nails 'The Downward Spiral which took place in1994 . The tour took place over most of theUnited States andEurope , playing in various medium-sized ballrooms across the country. This was NIN's first tour since the early 90's tours forPretty Hate Machine . During this time, NIN's music became angrier and more aggressive with releases like Broken andThe Downward Spiral , which led to the concerts being often very aggressive and personal, with band members often injuring themselves by accident. The tour consisted of four legs, beginning with a basic tour ofNorth America before going toEurope , then back toNorth America before ending the tour withWoodstock 94 . The stage set-up consisted of grungy curtains which would pulled down and up for visuals which might be played during songs (such as Hurt), or pulled up for live performances of more aggressive songs. The back of the stage was littered with darker and standing lights, with very little actual lights.Trent Reznor overhauled the band line-up and image for the tour; guitarist
Robin Finck joined to play guitars whileDanny Lohner joined on to playbass guitar .Chris Vrenna and James Wooley were brought back from thePretty Hate Machine Tour Series , however. Image-wise, instead of the sloppy, low-budget style for previous tours, the band often dressed in black leather smothered in corn starch, band members often changing their hair styles to radical hair styles for every concert. Robin Finck used makeup to give hide his eyebrows, and often Trent Reznor would dawn his 'fishnet gloves' as they would come to be known as for the show. The band's showy but aggressive tour style gave the band comparisons toDavid Bowie , whom Trent Reznor was a big fan of. Later in the shows,David Bowie and his protegeMarilyn Manson would often join Reznor on stage to sing his songs-as shown in the documentaryClosure .Closure , a double-VHS set that documented the live performance of the tour as well as the band from 1989-1991, and an extra VHS tape which had the band's music videos featured on them. It was rumored to released as aDVD in2005 , butInterscope Records drug their feet and refused to release it, which led the performance to mysteriously leaked onto torrent sites inDVD format fromTrent Reznor supposedly.Band line-up

Reeling from the success of
Pretty Hate Machine and Broken as well as the band's divorce fromTVT Records , the nearly immediate success ofThe Downward Spiral led to NIN playing larger venues. This debuted the band's new grungy and messy image in which band members would often come out in ragged clothes slathered in corn starch. They would often destroy their instruments at the end of concerts, attack each other, and stage-dive into the crowd. This led to NIN's notoriety as a live act. The shows often consisted of songs fromPretty Hate Machine , Broken,The Downward Spiral , as well as songs such asGet Down Make Love andDead Souls , which were formerly staples of their live show.Tour dates
