The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1922 was the 36th edition of Ireland’s premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran over the course of 1922 and 1923, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin on 9 September, 1923. The match was contested by Kilkenny and Tipperary, with Kilkenny taking the title by 4-2 to 2-6. It would be 45 years before Kilkenny defeat Tipperary in the championship again.

Format

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows:
* The winners of the Munster Championship advanced directly to a lone All-Ireland semi-final.
* Galway, a team who were unopposed in the Connacht Championship, advanced directly to the lone All-Ireland semi-final where they played the Munster champions.
* The winners of the Leinster Championship advanced directly to the All-Ireland final.
* There were no representatives from the Ulster Championship in the All-Ireland series due to the suspension of the competition.

Previous championship encounters

This particular fixture had become a frequent one in the history of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Kilkenny had played Tipperary a total of six times in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. As of 1922 Tipperary had recorded four wins over their great rivals and neighbours while Kilkenny had defeated Tipp on two occasions.

Overview

Sunday 9 September, 1923 was the date of the 1922 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Tipperary and Kilkenny. It was their first meeting in the championship since the All-Ireland final of 1916. Tipperary won on that occasion, the county’s last triumph in the championship decider. Kilkenny hadn’t won the All-Ireland title since 1913 when they defeated Tipperary to take their third championship in-a-row.

Match report

All-Ireland final day was a special day in the Irish sporting calendar. Over thirty special trains brought over 26,000 spectators to Croke Park in Dublin for an exiting game between near neighbour and rivals. The game itself is regarded as one of the greatest games up to that point in the history of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Both sets of players gave some remarkable displays of ground hurling, close tackling and man-to-man marking. As a result of this the opening thirty minutes was a low-scoring affair. Kilkenny registered 1-1 while Tipp scored 0-4 in the first-half. Ten minutes after the interval a goal for Tipperary put them into the lead again and looked set for victory. Matty Power struck with a goal for Kilkenny, however, with three minutes left in the game Tipp still led by three points. Then Kilkenny staged a remarkable rally. Paddy Donoghue and Dick Tobin struck twice with goals for Kilkenny. At the final whistle Kilkenny were the surprise champions by 4-2 to 2-6.
