Overview
Sunday
3 September was the date of the 1950 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Tipperary and Kilkenny. It was their first meeting in the championship since1945 when Tipperary were the winners. Tipperary also won the All-Ireland title in1949 and were going for back-to-back titles. Kilkenny last won the championship decider in1947 when they defeated Cork in one of the greatest games of hurling ever played. An interesting statistic at the time was the fact that Kilkenny hadn’t beatn Tipp in the championship since1922 .Match report
At 3:15pm the sliothar was thrown in and a novel All-Ireland final began in earnest. Tipperary, having an almost perpetual Indian Sign over their near neighbours and rivals, went into the game as favourites after coming through a tough provincial campaign. Kilkenny, however, had won the title three years earlier and many of the same team lined out against Tipp. At half-time it looked as if Kilkenny were finally going to break the Tipp stranglehold as they led by 0-7 to 0-5 and would be playing with the wind at their backs in the second-half. Kilkenny, however, froze during the second thirty minute period as Tipperary stepped up a gear. In the closing stages they led by 0-9 to 0-8, however, the game still hung in the balance. With just a few minutes left in the game Tipp seemed to clinch the title when
Paddy Kenny (hurler) goaled. The sliothar was immediately moved back up the field where Jimmy Kelly replied with a goal for Kilkenny. The game was really in the melting pot now as the clock ticked down. There were a few more threats for scores, however, Tipperary emerged victorious by 1-9 to 1-8.tatistics
