The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1964 was the 78th edition of Ireland’s premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran from May to September of that year, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin on 6 September. The match was contested by Tipperary and Kilkenny, with Tipperary taking the title by 5-13 to 2-8. It was Tipperary’s third All-Ireland title in four years.

Format

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows:
* There were no All-Ireland semi-finals.
* The winners of the Munster Championship advanced directly to the All-Ireland final.
* The winners of the Leinster Championship advanced directly to the All-Ireland final.
* The Ulster Championship remained suspended due to a lack of competition.
* Galway, a team who faced no competition in the Connacht Championship, played in the Munster Championship for the sixth consecutive year.

All-Ireland final

Overview

Sunday 6 September was the date of the 1964 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Tipperary and Kilkenny. It was Tipperary’s fourth appearance in the All-Ireland final in five years, having won the title in 1961 and 1962. Kilkenny were appearing in their second consecutive championship decider and went into the game as reigning champions after defeating Waterford in 1963. Both Tipp and Kilkenny last met in the championship in the All-Ireland semi-final of 1958 with victory going to Tipperary. An interesting statistic at the time was the fact that Kilkenny hadn’t defeated Tipperary in the championship since 1922.

Match report

With the pre-match festivities completed the sliothar was thrown in and the game got underway at 3:15pm. Kilkenny, as reigning All-Ireland champions, were expected to provide Tipperary with a stern test and much tougher opposition than previous encounters. The game was played in excellent weather conditions for hurling; however, at the break Tipperary led by 1-8 to 0-6. Three minutes after the restart Kilkenny exerted their hurling skills when John Teehan slotted a goal into the Tipp net to narrow the lead. Tipp, however, then moved up a gear and gave a master class in hurling in one of the most devastating attacking displays ever seen on All-Ireland final day. Jimmy Doyle started the rout when converted a free to stretch Tipp’s lead. Then Liam Devaney’s superb cross-field ball found Donie Nealon who slotted in Tipp’s second goal of the day. Young players such as Michael ‘Babs’ Keating and Mick Roche also played their part by chipping in with two further points before Jimmy Doyle set up Seán McLoughlin for a goal. With Tipperary leading by 3-12 to 1-7 the game was as good as over, however, there was no love lost between these two great rivals and near neighbours. By the end of the game Donie Nealon had slotted in two more goals to complete his hat-trick while Jimmy Doyle had amassed a grand total of ten points. The final score of 5-13 to 2-8 gave Tipp a third All-Ireland title in four years. The fourteen-point winning margin was the biggest All-Ireland final win since Tipperary had defeated Laois in the 1949 championship decider.
