The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1921 was the 35th edition of Ireland’s premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran over the course of 1921, 1922 and 1923, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin on 4 March, 1923. The match was contested by Limerick, represented by a selection of the county’s best players, and Dublin, represented by a Faughs, with Limerick taking the title by 8-5 to 3-2. It was Limerick’s third All-Ireland title ever and their second in four years.

Format

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows:
* The winners of the Munster Championship advanced directly to a lone All-Ireland semi-final.
* Galway, a team who were unopposed in the Connacht Championship, advanced directly to the lone All-Ireland semi-final where they played the Munster champions.
* The winners of the Leinster Championship advanced directly to the All-Ireland final.
* There were no representatives from the Ulster Championship in the All-Ireland series due to the suspension of the competition.

All-Ireland final

Overview

Sunday 4 March, 1923 was the date of the 1921 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Limerick and Dublin. It was their first ever meeting in the history of the championship. Dublin were contesting their third consecutive All-Ireland final. They lost to Cork in 1919 before gaining revenge over ‘the Rebels’ in the 1920 decider. Limerick were appearing in hurling’s big day for the first time since 1918 when the trounced Wexford to take the championship.

Match report

Because of the Civil War the 1921 All-Ireland final didn’t take place until 1923. Dublin, as reigning champions, were the favourites to retain the title. Ironically, the Dublin team didn’t contain a single native of the city. There were five Tipperary men, three Limerick men, three Clare men, two Kilkenny men and one each from Laois and Kildare. A keen close contest was in prospect for the attendance of over 18,000. The experienced Willie Walsh of Waterford got the game under way on a cold, dry spring afternoon. The opening exchanges were hectic with play swinging from end to end as first-time strokes on the ground and in the air were key features of the game. Limerick slowly got a grip on the game and asserted themselves in every area of the field. Bob McConkey was the star goal-poacher for Limerick. He captured three goals in the opening thirty minutes as Limerick had an eleven-point lead at the break on the score of 4-1 to 0-2. The second-half was pretty much the same with McConkey adding a fourth goal. Tom McGrath, who had a goal disallowed in the opening minutes, also scored before Willie Gleeson got a sixth. McConkey was at hand again in helping Limerick to capture two scrambled goals. Limerick’s performance was outstanding and they were deserving winners by 8-5 to 3-2.
