22°25′08″N 114°12′36″E / 22.419°N 114.210°ECoordinates: 22°25′08″N 114°12′36″E / 22.419°N 114.210°ECampus Rural Colours Purple and Yellow Affiliations The Chinese University of Hong Kong Website http://www.morningside.cuhk.edu.hk/ Morningside College (Chinese: 晨興書院) is one of the colleges of the Chinese University of Hong Kong established in 2006.[1] Morningside College is the smallest residential college of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, accommodating around 300 students at equilibrium.[2] In September 2010, Morningside College admitted its first cohort of 72 undergraduates.[3] Currently the college has 19 fellows and 4 affiliated fellows,[4] including Nobel laureate in economics Sir James Mirrlees, former vice-president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Professor Liu Pak-wai, and Fields medalist Professor Yau Shing-Tung.[5]

History
Origin
Owing to the academic structure reform that takes place in 2009 to 2012, Chinese University of Hong Kong has expected an increased student enrollment by about 3,000 upon the reversion to the four-year curriculum.[6] To accommodate more students, Chinese University of Hong Kong has decided to appeal to private donors for the establishment of new colleges, as the government refused to provide public funding for this purpose.[6] In January 2006, the Task Force on New Colleges visited six universities that have college systems of the United States and the United Kingdom, and in April, the University Council approved the setting up of few small to medium-sized colleges, and decided to establish Morningside College in May 2006.[6]
Foundation
Morningside College was established in 2006 as a residential college of Chinese University of Hong Kong with contributions from the Morningside Foundation and the Morningside Education Foundation.[7] In August 2006, Nobel Prize winner in Economic Sciences, Professor Sir James Mirrlees, was appointed to be the Founding Master of Morningside College.[8] On 6 June 2010, Morningside College officially has its first inaugural class.[3]
Campus
The college is located in between the central campus and the existing Chung Chi College, next to the Sports Center at the eastern end of the University and S. H. Ho College. The College is set against the contour of the hills commanding a full view of Tolo Harbour and is within walking distance of the Central Mall, University Library and University train station.[9]
The groundbreaking ceremony of Morningside College campus was held in 2008, and the campus is scheduled to be completed by September 2011.[10] The campus is expected to include:
- Two residence halls
- Dining hall
- Seminar rooms
- Laundry rooms and tuck shop
- Computer laboratory
- College offices
- Student Commons and activity rooms
- Garden
