Small is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal published twelve times a year. "Small" publishes research in science and technology on the micro- and nanoscales in the form of Communications, Reviews, Concepts, Highlights, Essays, and Full Papers.

The editorial office is in Weinheim, near Heidelberg in Germany, from where the peer review process is coordinated by an editorial team made up of chemists, physicists, and engineers.

The 2007 ISI Impact Factor of "Small" was 6.408.

Other journals in the "Small" family are:
*"Advanced Materials", which publishes research from all aspects of materials science in the form of shorter Communications, as well as Reviews and Research News.
*"Advanced Functional Materials", which has the same scope and standards as "Advanced Materials", but publishes longer Full Papers and Feature Articles.
*"Advanced Engineering Materials", which is published in collaboration with three important European materials societies, namely the DGM in Germany, the SF2M in France, and the SVMT in Switzerland. The members of these societies all receive the journal. Advanced Engineering Materials publishes peer-reviewed reviews, communications, and full papers, on topics centrered around structural materials, such as metals, alloys, ceramics, composites, plastics etc.
*"Chemical Vapor Deposition", which publishes Reviews, Short Communications, and Full Papers on all aspects of chemical vapor deposition and related technologies.
