Sherie Rene Scott (born February 8, 1967) is an American actress, singer and writer who is currently playing Ursula in the Broadway musical, The Little Mermaid to critical acclaim. She is a co-founder of Sh-K-Boom Records and has appeared in numerous both Off Broadway and Broadway productions.

Biography

Early life

Scott was born in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of a nurse and a chiropractor. She studied acting at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater under Sanford Meisner while working as a waitress. Her first role was in the 25th-anniversary production of "Hair" in 1993 at the United Nations.

Career

On Broadway, she has starred in "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", garnering nominations for a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award, and being named as a Drama League honoree. She starred in the Broadway role of Amneris in Elton John and Tim Rice’s "Aida" (2000), for which she won the Clarence Derwent Award. The single "A Step Too Far" performed by Elton John, Heather Headley and Sherie Scott from the 1999 Elton John And Tim Rice's Aida Concept Album charted at #15. Other Broadway credits include Sally Simpson in "Tommy" (1993), Marty in "Grease" (1995-96), Maureen in "Rent" (1997), and originating the role of Ursula in "The Little Mermaid" (2007) for which she received her second Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical.

Off-Broadway productions include John Guare’s play "Landscape of the Body" at the Signature Theatre, for which she received a 2006 Obie Award and a Lucille Lortel Award. Musicals include Jason Robert Brown’s "The Last Five Years" for which she received a Drama Desk Award Nomination, and the title role in "". Regionally, she has appeared in world premiere productions of "Randy Newman's Faust" (1995), where she met her future husband, Kurt Deutsch, and Kander and Ebb’s, "Over and Over", a musical adaptation of "The Skin of Our Teeth", for which Scott was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award.

Along with husband Kurt Deutsch, Scott co-founded Sh-K-Boom Records and Ghostlight Records, labels dedicated to preserving original cast albums and solo recordings by Broadway artists. They have released over 50 albums, earning four Grammy Award nominations and a special Drama Desk Award. Their catalogue includes "In the Heights", "Passing Strange", "The Drowsy Chaperone", "The Last Five Years", and Scott's critically acclaimed solo CD,"Sherie Rene Scott: Men I've Had".

Scott appears in a show she co-wrote with Dick Scanlan titled, "You May Now Worship Me". The most recent performance of the show was on March 31st, 2008 and benefited the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative of The Actors' Fund. "You May Now Worship Me" is currently in production and will be directed by Michael Mayer.

She and her husband have a son and live in Putnam County, New York.
