George Gravatt

George Gravatt

Lieutenant George Gravatt (d. 1843) was an officer in the British Army, and in 1839 was briefly commander of the Moreton Bay settlement in what is now Brisbane, Australia. A local hill was named Mount Gravatt, and later this name was transferred to the local suburb.

Gravatt was transferred with his regiment, the 28th Foot Regiment, to India [ [http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~garter1/somemorton.htm Some Information about Morton Bay Penal Settlement ] ] , where he died in 1843.
