Wire art

Wire art

Wire art is a typical South African form of art and craft, encompassing the sculpting and crafting of works of art using wire, beads, tin cans and other recycled goods.

Origins

This craft is uniquely South African and it comes likely from the North-East corner of South Africa.Fact|date=July 2008 For many years, due to a lack of resources to buy proper toys, the young boys of these regions have been fashioning wire, tin cans and whatever else they can get their hands on to make ingenious toys, for example model radios and cars with working steering.

Older inhabitants of the area, recognizing the uniqueness and marketability of these wire toys, began making their own wire creations and selling them to tourists visiting the region.

Products

Wire art lends itself to a wide range of ornamental products: cheap but functional and attractive items can be made out of wire.

Where to find it

As of 2008, wire art can be found in most South African street markets, for instance at the Greenmarket Square in Cape Town.
