- Bank Street (Manhattan)
Bank Street is a primarily residential street in the
Greenwich Village section ofNew York City , in the borough ofManhattan . It runs from West Street to Hudson Street, and Bleecker Street to Greenwich Avenue; it switches from west to east at Fifth Avenue. Between Hudson Street and Bleecker Street the position in the grid that would be occupied by Bank Street is a children's playground.Bank Street is named after a branch of the Bank of New York which had an office on Wall Street. In
1798 a clerk in the office was stricken with yellow fever, and, to avoid being quarantined and closed in the future, the bank bought eight lots in Greenwich Village and erected a branch there for use in emergencies.
