Oakwood Cemetery, located in Troy, NY, established in 1848 under The Oakwood Cemetery Association, is the third largest rural cemetery in the United States. It was created in response to the growing rural cemetery movement in New England. There are four man-made lakes, two residential structures, two chapels, twenty-four mausolea, and more than 55,000 graves. It is home to many famous gravesites, including Samuel Wilson (better known as Uncle Sam), military leaders John Wool and George Thomas, educator Emma Willard, Russel Sage, Jacob D. Vanderheyden, founder of Troy,
Abraham Jacob Lansing, founder of Lansingburgh, New York. It occupies more than 400 acres, and covers 10-12 miles of road.

History

Established in 1848 by the Oakwood Cemetery Association, The first burial took place in 1850 along with the inauguration in October of 1850.
