The 8th Lucknow Division was a formation of the British Indian Army's Northern Army, first formed as a result of the Kitchener reforms of the Indian Army in 1903. [Oxford History of the British Army] The Division remained in India on internal security duties during the Great War. [cite web|title=orbat.com|url=http://orbat.com/site/cimh/divisions/Indian%208th%20Division.pdf] but some of its units and formations would be transferred for service overseas, the 8th (Lucknow) Cavalry Brigade, was transferred to the 1st Indian Cavalry Division and served in France on the Western Front [cite web|title=cwgc.org|url=http://www.cwgc.org/ypres/content.asp?id=33&menu=subsub] and in Egypt. [cite web|title=warpath|url=http://www.warpath.orbat.com/indian_cav/1_ind_cav_div.htm] in the Middle Eastern theatre, the 22nd Lucknow Infantry Brigade would also serve in Egypt as part of the 11th Indian Division.
