footnotes = IEEE BUET Student Branch is a student branch under the Bangladesh Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). BUET stands for Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, which is the main educational institution under which it operates. Most of the members are from Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and some members are also from Department of CSE. Current number of members is 25.

History

IEEE BUET Student Branch was established in 1994. The IEEE Bangladesh Section was established in the same year. So the Branch became the first student branch under IEEE Bangladesh Section.

Executive Committee

The Chair serves as the executive authority of the organization. The current chair is Sajid Muhaimin Choudhury. The branch also has a counselor from the Department of EEE, Prof. Shahidul I. Khan [ [http://teacher.buet.ac.bd/shahidul/ Prof. Shahidul Islam Khan ] ]

Activities

The members of the branch actively take part in various actives and contests. A brief description of the most outstanding achievements is given here:

Myron Zucker Student Design Award, 2001

Myron Zucker Student Design Award was achived for designing a prepaid energy meter.

Winner of Outstanding Undergraduate Impact Award (2007) and Honourable mention in 2005, 2003.

Winner of IEEE Enterprise Award 2006, which included 5000USD Funding for a project titled "Sustainable Technology Solutions for 1.Providing ICT Based Services to Rural People"

The IEEE R10 Student Congress

The student branch participated in the IEEE R10 Student congress in Channai India [ [http://www.thedailystar.net/campus/2008/04/03/feature_IEEE.htm ::: Star Campus ::: ] ] . The branch won the Vibrant Student Branch Award in R10 (Asia Pacific)

IEEE R10 Website Design Contest 2006

Criticism

The branch charges standard annual 25$ fees. Many students complain that the fee is too much a burden on students of a public university in a third world country. Also, the students have questioned the necessity of having relation with such a society, where as they can form their own society without any membership fee.
