San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department serves San Bernardino County, California, which is geographically the largest county in the lower 48 states. The department provides law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas of the county and 14 contract cities, serving a total of 1,029,466 county residents. Organizational Structure

The department is organized into the following bureau's:

Administrative Services Bureau

This bureau operates the following divisions:

*Emergency Services- Aviation and Volunteer Forces.

**Aviation provides services including general law enforcement support, surveillance, fire suppression, medical transport, and search and rescue duties. It operates 6 Astar B-3 Eurocopters, 1 Mcdonnell Douglas MD500E, 2 Bell UH-1H Super Huey II's, 1 Bell 212, 1 Sikorsky H-3, 1 Aero Commander Grand Reconnaissance, and 1 Cessna 182 [ [http://www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/sheriff/aviation/Aviation.asp SBSD Aviation] ] .

**Volunteer Forces supports the 2,000 volunteers within 112 units in SBSD. These units include Reserve Deputies, Explorer Scouts, and Search and Rescue members. Detentions and Corrections Bureau

SBSD operates a total of 9 jail facilities throughout the county. The average daily inmate population is 5,600. In 2006, 107,606 people were booked into these jails. The bureau operates tho following jails that are used for long term housing [ [http://www.sbcounty.gov/sheriff/detentions/corrections.asp SBSD Correction Bureau Webpage] ] :

*West Valley Detention Center- This is SBSD's main jail facility and opened in June, 1991. It is located in Rancho Cucamonga, California. It is used primarily to house pre-sentenced county inmates, and is capable of housing 3,291 inmates daily.

*Central Detention Center- This facility served as SBSD's main jail since it's opening in 1971. It is located in downtown San Bernardino, California. It is primarily used to house pre-sentenced county inmates and federal inmates, and averages a daily population of 930. The US Marshal Service also uses the facility as the west coast hub for transporting and housing federal inmates.

*Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center- This facility primarily serves as housing for inmates sentenced to county jail. It also houses some pre-sentence inmates. It averages a population of 1020 inmates daily. It is located in Devore, at the north end of San Bernardino.

*Adelanto Detention Center- This is SBSD's newest jail facility, which opened in January 2006. It is used to house approximately 700 pre-sentence inmates per day.

*Transportation Detail- This detail operates 12 buses, 13 vans, and 2 cars to transport an average of 286,000 yearly, mostly to court appearances. In 2006, the detail accumulated 934,000 miles.

Field Support Bureau

Patrol Operations Region I

This bureau provides law enforcement services to the densely populated southwest corner of the county, which includes parts of the San Bernardino Valley, Pomona Valley, Cucamonga Valley, and the communities in the San Bernardino Mountains [ [http://www.sbcounty.gov/sheriff/patrol/Patrol.asp SBSD Patrol Stations] ] . The valley areas are part of the Inland Empire (California). This area is the 15th largest United States metropolitan area. This area also operates a Type I Jail booking facility.

*Big Bear Valley Station- Provides law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas around Big Bear Lake, California. This area includes Big Bear City, Sugarloaf, and Baldwin Lake and the City of Big Bear Lake.
**Big Bear Jail- This is a Type I Jail used for booking and court holding for the Big Bear Superior Court. It is located at the Big Bear Station.

*Big Bear Lake Police Department-These deputies operate out of the Big Bear Station.

*Central Station- This station provides law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas of San Bernardino. This area includes unincorporated areas of the San Bernardino Valley such as Muscoy, Devore, San Bernardino, Rialto, Colton, and Glen Helen Regional Park, also serving as the base for deputies for the contract cities of Loma Linda and Grand Terrace.

*Chino Hills Station- Formely known as the West End Station, this station serves the unincorporated areas around Montclair, Upland, Ontario, Chino, Mount Baldy Wilderness, and the City of Chino Hills.

*Chino Hills Police Department-This substation operates out of the same facility as the Chino Hills Station.

*Fontana Station- Provides law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas around the City of Fontana, including Bloomington, Lytle Creek, and the California Motor Speedway.

*Grand Terrace Police Department- The deputies are assigned to the City of Grand Terrace out of the Central Station.

*Highland Police Department- This substation provides law enforcement services exclusivly to the City of Highland, California and the neighboring San Maunel Indian Reservation as well as a few unincorporated "pockets" of residential neighborhoods;currently, the station is based in an abandoned church on Base Line Road, almost a mile west of the 210 Freeway, but there are plans to build a newer, bigger substation closer to the center of town within two years.

*Loma Linda Police Department- The deputies are assigned to the City of Loma Linda from the Central Station.

*Rancho Cucamonga Police Department- This regional station provides law enforcement exclusivly to the City of Rancho Cucamonga and the unincorporated community of San Antonio Heights.

*Twin Peaks Station- Serves the unincorporated west-central portion of the San Bernardino Mountains including the communities of Lake Arrowhead, California, Crestline, California, Running Springs, and Twin Peaks, California.

*Yucaipa Station- Provides law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas around the cities of Yucaipa and Redlands, including Mentone, Oak Glen, Mountain Home Village, Angelus Oaks, Forest Falls, and Barton Flats. It also operates a resident deputy sub-station in Barton Flats.

*Yucapia Police Department- A contract city that serves the City of Yucaipa, this station shares a facility with the Yucaipa Station.

Patrol Operations Region II

This bureau provides law enforcement services to the large Mojave Desert portion of the county [ [http://www.sbcounty.gov/sheriff/patrol/Patrol.asp SBSD Patrol Stations] ] . The deputies at many of these stations operate in remote areas. This area also operates 4 of SBSD's Type I Jail booking facilities.

*Adelanto Police Department- A contract city, this station exclusively serves the City of Adelanto. In 2007, 15 patrol deputies responded to 30,121 calls for service. The city had a population of 27,139.

*Apple Valley Police Department- A contract city, this station exclusively serves the Town of Apple Valley. In 2007, 35 patrol deputies responded to 57,817 calls for service. The city had a population of 70,297.

*Barstow Station- Provides law enforcement services the unincorporated areas around the City of Barstow. This area includes unincorporated Barstow, Lenwood, Grandview, Hinkley, Yermo, Daggett, Newberry Springs, Trona, Baker, Red Mountain, Kramer Junction, Helendale, Fort Irwin, and Ludlow. This station also has resident deputy sub-stations in Trona and Baker. In 2007, 38 patrol deputies responded to 27,121 calls for service. This station covers 9,219 square miles, and serves a population of 23,298.
**Barstow Jail- This Type I Jail is used as a booking facility for the Barstow area and court holding for the Barstow Superior Court. It is located at the Barstow Station.

*Colorado River Station- Serves the unincorporated areas around Needles and along the Colorado River including Big River, Parker Dam, Havasu Landing. This station has a resident deputy sub-station in Havasu Landing. This station operates a Marine Enforcement unit that patols San Bernardino County's portion of the Colorado River. In 2007, 23 patrol deputies responded to 6,195 calls for service. This station serves a population of 10,433 over 5,132 square miles.
**Needles Jail- This Type I Jail is used as a booking facility for the Needles area and court holding for the Needles Superior Court. It is located at the Colorado River Station.

*Hesperia Police Department- A contract city, this station exclusively serves the City of Hesperia. In 2007, 37 patrol deputies responded to 72,897 calls for service. The city population is 85,876.

*Morongo Basin Station- Serves the unincorporated areas on the Morongo Basin. This area includes Morongo Valley, Landers, Johnson Valley, Joshua Tree, Wonder Valley, Pioneertown, Amboy, Cadiz, and Flamingo Heights. In 2007, 21 patrol deputies responded to 16,217 calls for service. The station serves 23,196 over 2,729 square miles.
**Morongo Jail- This Type I Jail is used as a booking facility for the Morongo Basin and court holding for the Joshua Tree Superior Court. It is located at the Morongo Basin Station.

*Needles Police Department- A contract city that serves the City of Needles. The deputies operate out of the Colorado River Station. In 2007, 8 patrol deputies responded to 10,500 calls for service. The city population is 5,759.

*Twentynine Palms Police Department- A contact city that serves the City of Twentynine Palms. The deputies operate out of the Morongo Basin Station. In 2007, 11 patrol deputies responded to 16,010 calls for service. The city has a population of 24,830.

*Victor Valley Station- Serves the unincorporated areas of the Victor Valley. This area includes Helendale, Oro Grande, Mountain View Acres, Pinon Hills, Wrightwood, Oak Hills, Phelan, Lucerne Valley, Spring Valley Lake, El Mirage, Cajon Junction, Summit Valley, Silver Lakes as well as unincorporated Adelanto, Apple Valley, Hesperia, and Victorville. This station also has sub-stations in Lucerne Valley and Phelan. In 2007, 43 patrol deputies responded to 41,475 calls for service. The station covers 1,403 square miles with a population of 53,583.
**Victor Valley Jail- This is a Type-I jail used for booking by the surrounding stations and court housing at the Victorville Superior Court. It is located at the Victor Valley Station.

*Victorville Police Department- A contract city, this station exclusively serves the City of Victorville. In 2007, 65 patrol deputies responded to 107,968 calls for service. The city population was 102,538.

*Yucca Valley Police Department- A contact city that serves the City of Yucca Valley. The deputies operate out of the Morongo Basin Station. In 2007, 13 patrol deputies responded to 20,105 calls for service. The city population was 21,044.

Members Killed on Duty

Ten SBSD deputies have been killed in the line of duty. SBSD established the Frank Bland Memorial at it's headquarters to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the citizens of San Bernardino County [ [http://www.sbcounty.gov/sheriff/Memorial.asp Frank Bland Memorial] ] .

*Deputy Billy Heckle EOW January 1, 1960. Deputy Heckle was shot and killed while protecting another deputy in Bloomington.

*Lt. Al Stewart EOW March 9, 1973. Lt. Stewart was shot and killed by an ex-convict who had just killed a CHP officer and service station employee in the Cajon Pass. Lt. Stewart exchanged gunfire with the killer, but was tragically killed with the CHP officers stolen revolver.

*Deputy Frank Pribble EOW July 6, 1975. Deputy Pribble was shot and killed at a rest stop near Fontana after locating a suspect who had been involved in a domestic disturbance.

*Deputy Clifford Sanchez EOW April 5, 1985. Deputy Sanchez was shot and killed during a robbery attempt in San Bernardino.

*Deputy Donald Demuelle EOW July 31, 1986. He died when the helicopter he was flying in crashed into Lake Silverwood. The helicopter was attempting to locate grand theft auto suspects who were stripping cars in the area.

*Deputy Keith Farley EOW April 12, 1987. Deputy Farley died from a cerebral hemorrhage after a kick to the head from a suspect while arresting him.

*Deputy Russell Roberts EOW September 17, 1995. Deputy Roberts was struck by a vehicle while investigating a traffic collision near Needles.

*Deputy Ron Ives EOW September 1, 2004. Deputy Ives died in Rancho Cucamonga while riding a motor unit when a citizen ran a red light and collided with him.

*Deputy Greg Gariepy EOW June 22, 2005. Deputy Gariepy died in a traffic collision when repsonding to assist another deputy in Yucca Valley.

*Deputy Danny Lobo, Jr EOW October 11, 2005. Deputy Lobo died in a traffic collision in Rancho Cucamonga while responding to assist another deputy. He was assigned to a motor unit.
