He played hurling with his local club St. Vincent's and with the Dublin senior inter-county team in the 1950s and 1960s. He later served as manager of the Limerick senior inter-county team on two occasions in the 1970s and 1980s. Drumgoole is regarded as one of the greatest players never to have won an All-Ireland medal.
Noel is the last player to have captained a Dublin side to a Leinster title and in 1984, he was named on the Centenary Team of players who hadn’t won All-Ireland honours.
In 1968, Noel founded the Na Piarsaigh GAA Club on the north side of Limerick city. The club has gone on to be a powerful force in the Limerick senior championship but the coveted senior title still evades them. Notable players past and present include: Damien Quigley, David Breen and Kevin Downse with a good few more on the way.
