Jimmy Finn (born 1931) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Borris-Ileigh and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team in the 1950s.

Playing career

Club

Finn played his club hurling with his local Borris-Ileigh club and enjoyed much success. He was barely out of minor ranks when he won his first senior county title in 1949. It was Borris-Ileigh’s first senior triumph. Finn won two further county titles in 1950 and 1953.

Inter-county

Finn first came to prominence on the Tipperary inter-county scene in the late 1940s as a member of the minor team. He won a Munster minor title in 1949 before subsequently winning an All-Ireland medal at this level. By 1950 Finn had joined the Tipperary senior team. That year he won a National Hurling League medal before collecting his first senior Munster title following a victory over Tipperary. He later won his first All-Ireland medal following a win over Kilkenny. In 1951 Finn was only twenty years old when he was appointed captain of the Tipperary senior hurling team. That year he guided his team to another Munster final victory over Cork and another All-Ireland final victory, giving Finn his second set of provincial and All-Ireland medals.

Cork dominated the Munster Championship for the next three years, however, Finn won a second National League medal in 1952. Three more league titles came his way in quick succession in 1954 (as captain), 1955 and 1957. In 1958 Finn won his third Munster title. This was later converted into his third All-Ireland medal following a victory over Galway. The following year he won a sixth National League medal, however, Tipp lost their Munster crown. Finn retired from inter-county hurling shortly afterwards, having also won Railway Cup medals with Munster in 1952, 1955, 1957 and 1958.

Honours

In retirement from hurling Finn came to be regarded as one of the greatest players of all-time. He was named in the right wing-back position on the GAA Hurling Team of the Century and was also picked in the same position on the Tipperary Team of the Century.
