He is best known for his participation in the Pancrase fighting organization. He holds notable wins over Frank Shamrock, Masakatsu Funaki, Minoru Suzuki, Matt Hume, Jason Delucia, and Vernon White. Yamada has also fought Ken Shamrock, Bas Rutten and Guy Mezger. On December 17, 1994 Yamada advanced to the finals of the King of Pancrase Tournament where he lost to Ken Shamrock via unanimous decision.
