Charles Town, West Virginia built for members of the Washington family. The house was designed byJohn Ariss forSamuel Washington in 1770. Washington moved from his farm on Chotank creek inStafford County, Virginia to Harewood, accumulating 3800 acres by the time he died in 1781.George Washington visited the house several times, including a visit in 1794 for the wedding ofJames Madison to Dolley Payne Todd. Dolley's sister was Lucy Washington, wife of Samuel Washington's sonGeorge Steptoe Washington , who had inherited the estate.
