Reynoldstown

Reynoldstown is a neighborhood of the city of Atlanta, Georgia.

Reynoldstown is a large residential neighborhood located between the Cabbagetown and Edgewood neighborhoods south of the CSX rail line.

The community was originally settled after the American Civil War by freed slaves who were employed by the railroad.

Madison and Sarah Reynolds were among the first ex-slaves to move into the area. It is believed that the neighborhood was named to honor them. Their son, Isaiah Pearson Reynolds became a great community leader after he graduated from Clark University.

Reynoldstown was annexed by the city of Atlanta in 1909. The community continued to thrive and prosper until the 1950’s, when the railroad industry began to decline. Today the neighborhood is gentrifying and attracting young whites to the neighborhood.

The street plan is a haphazard mesh of differently oriented small grids which leaves many "T" intersections. Flat Shoals Avenue cuts diagonally across the district from northwest to southeast. The older section is west of the rail right of way planned for the Beltline. There are many different home styles including an entire block of double shotgun houses on Chester Avenue. Like neighboring Cabbagetown, many of the streets are "one way" due to the narrowness of the streets and lack of off street parking. Reynoldstown is a Historic District and is served by the Inman Park/Reynoldstown MARTA station.
