In 1685, Teunis Cornelis Slingerland and Johannes Appel purchased an area of land of about convert|10000|acre|km2 in the area from natives. Originally named Jerusalem, its name was changed to distinguish from other Jerusalems in New York. Feura is believed to be a native word meaning "fire." by 1886, there was a church, school, tavern, blacksmith and post office. The northwest end of New York Central's Selkirk Yard originally built in 1913 is in the eastern part of Feura Bush.
