The Global Health Review (GHR) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that increases the capacity of students and health professionals to interlink, initiate action, and create comprehensive understanding of specific global health issues.
Our Vision
Our vision is to bridge the gap between students and health professionals by providing a forum and a vehicle to cooperate and network with each other.
History
GHR was initially conceptualized in 2007 by Lawrence Ham and Brian Sandoval, then graduate students in the
Master of Public Health program at theUniversity of Southern California , under the direction of Dr. Gurinder Shahi, MBBS, PhD, MPH in collaboration with MPH candidates from PM 565: Emerging Trends in Global Health, a required course in the Global Health Leadership track of USC's MPH program. The organization received official501(c)(3) status in early 2008.GHR began as an organization committed to working with academic universities to provide a platform for students to disseminate their ideas in the form of stimulating multimedia content. We are very much like a review journal in the sense that we publish regular online issues and strive to disseminate high-quality literature. As GHR has grown, however, we have also identified the need for creating new partnerships--and strengthening existing ones--among students pursuing global health projects and careers. In response, we have created the GHR network to share resources nationwide. We are still very much invested in our original role as a review journal, and encourage students starting new chapters to emphasize both the intellectual and the practical goals of GHR.
What We Do
• We maintain a database, which includes: research, training, internship and practicum opportunities; cross-cultural multimedia; and local and international global health-related events.
• We give members an integrative platform through events and the web for their health ideas to be seen and their voice to be heard.
• We provide members with new networks that bridge the gaps in global health in order to induce collaboration and cultural competence.
• We increase cross-organizational partnerships to unify existing resources and services.
Why would students want to join GHR or create their own chapter at their academic insitution?
GHR is a resource for students at their academic institution. When students create their own chapter, they create a network, both internal and across institutions. GHR serves as a platform for sharing ideas, resources, opportunities, and causes. This field is absolutely dependent upon people working together as a cohesive unit. By establishing GHR at schools across the nation to discuss key issues, events, and action items, we can accomplish far more than we could as interested, yet disconnected, individuals.
Why would academic institutions and other health professionals want to support a GHR chapter?
Collaboration is a cornerstone of global health. Creating partnerships and networking has become a foundation for GHR - by becoming part of GHR, through membership, donation and/or partnership, you are joining a team of like-minded individuals that spread awareness on select global health issues. GHR chapters share a same common vision and mission but have an autonomy of direction; maybe you dream of helping kids get vaccinated in Brazil or raising sexual health awareness in young mothers in China. We understand that self-determination is key to any organization's success and we encourage chapters to develop their own strengths and interests while relying on the umbrella non-profit for cohesiveness and support.
