Iron City is a city in Lawrence and Wayne counties in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The population was 368 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Iron City is located at coor dms|35|1|32|N|87|35|1|W|city (35.025686, -87.583704)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 368 people, 151 households, and 107 families residing in the city. The population density was 401.4 people per square mile (154.4/km²). There were 159 housing units at an average density of 173.5/sq mi (66.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.28% White, 2.17% African American, 0.27% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.

There were 151 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% were married couples living together, 17.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $20,625, and the median income for a family was $28,889. Males had a median income of $20,729 versus $15,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,185. About 15.1% of families and 23.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.1% of those under age 18 and 22.6% of those age 65 or over.
