Shopian District

Shopian District is a district of Jammu and Kashmir. The capital Shopian is one the historical towns of Jammu and Kashmir. This town is importance due to the Mughal road which is currently under construction that connects Kashmir valley with Rajouri and Poonch districts. Shopian town is also known as "Apple Town of Kashmir". The apples of this town are world wide famous for its quality. Shopian was previously named as SHENE YEN because of huge snowfall. AHARBAL fall,worlds famous water fall is just 12 km away from Shopian town. The cool waters of RAMBI ARA refresh minds. There is historical JAMA MASJID that resembles that of Srinagar. This district is 54km from capital city. Kungwatan, Kowsernag are places to see.Shopian town has often been at the centre of political turmoil in history. In 1979, Pt. Swaroop Nath Saraf, a veteran freedom fighter of National Conference headed an all-parties action committee to achieve the district status for Shopian. Shopian was finally accorded a district status in 2007 by the cabinet order of Ghulam Nabi Azad government.
