Leopold Quarter

Leopold Quarter

The Leopold Quarter (in French: Quartier Léopold, in Dutch: Leopoldswijk) is a quarter of Brussels. The district was created in 1837, named after King Leopold II, and covers the areas of the municipalities of the City of Brussels, Etterbeek, Ixelles and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.

The quarter contains the European Parliament (with its building being known as the Espace Léopold) and other European Union offices. It is also the main financial district of Brussels. The Brussels-Luxembourg Station was formerly known as the Leopold Quarter station before undergoing major rebuilding, it was the third station to be built in Brussels.

Historically, before the arrival of the institutions of the European Union, the area was prestigious residential and was the first district outside Brussels' medieval walls to flourish.
