Located behind the chancery building is a memorial to the World War II United States Army soldiers who died during the Bakers Creek air crash, the deadliest air disaster in Australian history.cite web| last=Hefling | first=Kimberly | title="Crash Memorial Without Permanent Home" | work=| publisher="The Washington Post"| date=2007-09-25 | url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/25/AR2007092500152.html | accessdate=2008-06-11] Because embassies are considered foreign soil, the Bakers Creek Memorial Association petitioned American politicians to relocate the memorial to Arlington National Cemetery. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey, Jr. of Pennsylvania inserted language into the 2008 defense authorization bill to relocate the memorial. The memorial's relocation is planned for June 2008.

The embassy has featured Australian wine tastings, exhibitions of ceramics by Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, sketches of World War II soldiers by Louis Kahan, paintings of Aboriginal women, and paintings of the Outback by Ben Shearer. A gallery located inside the embassy is open from 10am until 2pm on weekdays.cite web| last=| first=| title="From Australia, the Pitcher of Cool Simplicity" | work=| publisher="The Washington Post"| date=2006-11-25 | url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/24/AR2006112401185.html | accessdate=2008-06-11] cite web| last=Dawson | first=Jessica | title="Painting a New Visual Vocabulary" | work=| publisher="The Washington Post"| date=2006-07-22 | url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/21/AR2006072101695.html | accessdate=2008-06-11] cite web| last=Dawon | first=Jessica | title="'Bells' That Don't Ring True" | work=| publisher="The Washington Post"| date=2004-11-18 | url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58790-2004Nov17.html | accessdate=2008-06-11] cite web| last=Richard | first=Paul | title="Louis Kahan, Making Servicemen Look Like Stars" | work=| publisher="The Washington Post"| date=2005-04-30 | url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27114-2005Apr30.html | accessdate=2008-06-11] cite web| last= | first= | title="To Do" | work=| publisher="The Washington Post"| date=2004-05-12 | url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17045-2004May11.html | accessdate=2008-06-11] __NOTOC__
