Ashis Roy

Dr. Ashis Roy (born June 1, 1932) is the first man from India to run 100 marathons. He ran his first Marathon at the age of 52, and completed his 109th Marathon (the Potomac River Run Marathon) on May 1, 2011 at 78.[1] He is a cardiologist, and the author of "The Joy of Running".[2]

Career

Dr. (Wing Commander) Ashis Roy served in the Indian Air Force for 21 years and after retirement settled in New Delhi in 1978 as a Practicing Physician Cardiologist.[citation needed] At the age of 50 years Dr. Roy took up jogging and running to maintain good health. He ran his 1st Marathon at the age of 52 years and by the time he became 75 years old, he had completed 82 marathon races, which is a National record for men in India.[citation needed] His achievements in the field of most strenuous sports of running 42.2 km. marathon, is the rarest example of extraordinary excellence in sports.[citation needed]

  • Dr. Roy is arguably the first Indian to have run a Marathon race after attaining the age of 60 years as well as 70 years.
  • Dr. Roy is the first Indian who has run the following three Marathons within a space of 4 Weeks:
  1. B.S.F. 50 Years Independence Marathon Delhi – 19th Oct. 1997
  2. New York City Marathon – 2nd Nov. 1997[3]
  3. Ocean State Marathon Rhode Island – 9th Nov. 1997[4]
  • Dr. Roy is the only Asian to have run the following three Marathon Races in U.S.A. on three consecutive Sundays and stood first in all three races in his age group of 65 – 69 Years:
  1. Toledo Glass City Marathon – 25 April 1999.[5]
  2. Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon – 2 May 1999.[6]
  3. Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon – 9 May 1999.[7]
  • Dr. Roy is the first man in the world above 70 yrs to run two marathons on two consecutive Sundays:
  1. First one in Prague International Marathon on 18 May 2003[8] &
  2. Second one on 25 May 2003 in Vienna City Marathon.[9]
  • Roy is the only man in the world above 70 yrs who has run three marathons within a span of six weeks. He ran the following three marathons in six weeks:
  1. Charlottesville Marathon on April 16.[10]
  2. Forest City Marathon on May 8 of 2005.[11]
  3. Buffalo Marathon on May 29, 2005 at Buffalo, New York.[12]
  • Dr. Roy is the only man in the World above 75 years who has run eight marathons within a span of eight months:
