JIS CARES and "Letters from Aceh"

Following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, JIS started a campaign called JIS CARES to raise money for schools affected by the disaster. The campaign included "Letters from Aceh", a collection of letters and photographs exchanged between the children of the tsunami affected Indonesian province of Aceh, students from JIS, and schools worldwide.cite web|url=http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/tsunami-letters-build-goodwill-and-schools/2005/11/14/1131951100299.html|title="Tsunami letters build goodwill and schools"|publisher="The Age"|date=2005-11-15|first=Mark|last=Forbes|accessdate=2008-06-21] The collection has a foreword by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and proceeds were donated to a school-rebuilding program. Threats and security

Since its founding, JIS has been affected by the political and economic turbulence of Jakarta, receiving both direct and indirect threats to its security. During the 1960s, an attempted coup d'état by the Communist Party of Indonesia forced the evacuation of the school. In 1998, the school year ended early due to riots leading up to President Suharto's resignation.cite web|url=http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2008/01/01/jis-gets-festive-mood-50th-anniversary.html|title="http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2008/01/01/jis-gets-festive-mood-50th-anniversary.html"|publisher="The Jakarta Post"|date=2002|first=Viva|last=Goldner|accessdate=2008-07-14]

JIS has also been a potential target for terrorism.cite web|url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DEFD71039F934A15756C0A9639C8B63&scp=2|title=U.S. Embassy in Indonesia Closes as Web Site Plots an Attack|publisher="The New York Times"|date=2005-05-27|first=Raymond|last=Bonner|accessdate=2008-07-19] Following the 2002 Bali bombings, JIS and other international schools in Jakarta closed for several weeks after warnings of a possible terror attack.cite web|url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D01E2DD1130F93BA25752C1A9649C8B63&scp=1|title=THREATS AND RESPONSES: A QAEDA CELL; Bali Bomb Plotters Said to Plan To Hit Foreign Schools in Jakarta|publisher="The New York Times"|date=2002-11-18|first=Raymond|last=Bonner|coauthors=Jane Perlez|accessdate=2008-07-19] cite web|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/2479299.stm|title=Terror threat shuts Jakarta schools|publisher="BBC News"|date=2002-11-15|author=Staff writer|accessdate=2008-07-19] JIS was on the target list of the team responsible for the 2003 Marriott Hotel bombing, which killed 13 people.cite web|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3266457.stm|title=Jakarta finds 'terror target list'|publisher="BBC News"|date=2003-11-13|author=Staff writer|accessdate=2008-07-19]

In response to these threats, JIS has made several security upgrades. In 2002, the school added a three-meter-high "blast wall," a "boom gate" in front of the school, and protective security film over exterior windows.cite web|url=http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,393815,00.html|title=Where Will They Strike Next?|publisher="Time Magazine"|date=2002-11-25|first=Simon|last=Elegant|accessdate=2008-07-19] According to the head of the Australian International School in Jakarta, JIS revieved $2 million in US government security assistance in 2004.cite web|url=http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/09/30/1096527863791.html?from=storylhs|title=School seeks loan to beef up security|publisher="The Age"|date=2004-10-01|first=Mathew|last=Moore|accessdate=2008-07-19] By 2005, the school had installed a massive security fence, with guards checking cars before they entered the premises.

From May 2005 to June 2008, various counterterrorism officials stated their belief that the threat of a terrorist attack in Jakarta had diminished, although authorities continued to stress the need for vigilance.cite web|url=http://www.theage.com.au/news/in-depth/kinghit-ji-down-but-not-out/2007/06/15/1181414542846.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap3|title=King-hit JI down but not out|publisher="The Age"|date=2007-06-16|first=Mark|last=Forbes|coauthor=Daniel Flitton|accessdate=2008-07-19] cite web|url=http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iDyO37Z304ow51G9iRXaZmP_uzpA|title=SE Asian terror groups pose 'very real' threat: think tank|publisher="AFP"|date=2008-07-19|author=Staff writer|accessdate=2008-07-19]
